Hair coloring is the art of altering the color of the hair, and is a practice that has been around for centuries. The processes involved have changed drastically over the years, and companies now offer many different products which give the color specialist and the consumer a wider range of services to meet their hair color needs. Whether it’s gray coverage, making a statement, more vibrancy, brightness, higher shine, or fullness that you wish to achieve, properly done hair color can make your hair dreams a reality. With Wella certified Master Color Experts on staff at Kosmos Hair salon in Jupiter, we can help you achieve any color goal. We offer the best hair products on the market, including Wella Koleston Perfect Permanent Color, Wella Blondor lighteners, Wella Color Touch Demi-permanent hair color, and soon to be released, Wella Illumina Color. We also offer the Shwarzkopf Igora Royal color line to really give our guests the best services offered. Whether permanent or demi permanent hair color is right for you is something you can discuss with your Kosmos stylist to really get on track to having your hair look its best.

So what is the real difference between permanent and demi-permanent hair color? Permanent hair color uses hydrogen peroxide which will help remove the melanin in each shaft, and in effect actually lighten the color out. Ammonia is also used, and will open the hair cuticle to allow the color to deposit and be chemically bonded with the hair. Since the molecular structure of permanent colors are so large, this lifting of the hair cuticle is necessary to allow the color to penetrate. Permanent hair color is necessary for achieving 100% gray coverage and is also used for those of us that wish to lighten our base color a few shades. Complete gray coverage, vibrant red heads, lighter and richer brunettes, and sunny blondes are all aided by a permanent hair color. It is recommended to retouch the color every four to six weeks to keep it looking fresh.

Demi-permanent hair colors offer a more subtle approach. They do not contain ammonia and thus only deposit color onto the hair. Their molecular structure is much smaller than that of permanent hair color and therefore can only slightly penetrate the shaft without raising the cuticle. Since the cuticle isn’t being raised, the color will lay on the shaft rather than reach its cortex (center) making the result wash away after an average of 24 shampoos. This makes demi-permanent colors a much gentler option, but also means they cannot lift the color and make it lighter. It also means the growing out process is easier as there will be little, if any, line of demarcation. In general, demi-permanents hair colors are more conditioning and have a higher shine than their permanent counterparts. They come in a wide variety of colors and are great for toning out unwanted brassiness or warming up faded color tones, are perfect for subtly punching up your hair color a notch without unwanted commitment. Demi-permanent hair colors can also blend gray hair away without full coverage, giving it a softer, multi-tonal look. They even offer it in clear for those who don’t want to alter their hair color, but want some mega-watt shine.
